Christmas Baking: Cut-Out Sugar Cookies

OK, so everyone has their favorite cut out sugar cookie recipe…but I’ll bet you haven’t tried this one. My mom got this from my Aunt Cookie (isn’t that a great name? It’s not her real name, of course, but it’s all anyone ever calls her) many, many years ago, so we call them Cookie’s Sugar Cookies. This is the recipe that caused me to write this brief post in 2007.

Without further adieu…

Cookie’s Sugar Cookies
1 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup sour cream (I use light and it’s fine)
2 tsp baking soda
5 1/2 cups flour, plus more for rolling

Cream together first 4 ingredients. In a separate bowl, combine sour cream and baking soda, and then mix into the buttery mixture. Add flour a little at a time, until you get a pretty stiff dough. CHILL THE DOUGH…for at least an hour, or up to a day or so if you’re me and do this in stages. Heavily flour a cutting board or whatever surface you’re rolling them out on. Roll and cut, however thin/thick you like them. Bake at 375 for 6-10 minutes (depending on thickness) until very lightly browned. Frost with a powdered sugar frosting.

I still look forward to these every Christmas. It is one of the best benefits of marrying into this family.
